Hey, I’m Justin C. Lloyd, founder of MLM Skates.
Some people call me “Mongo”.

In 1996, the son of a family friend set me on a skateboard and pushed me down a hill. At four years old, I had no clue what adrenaline was, yet I was hooked none the less. It took me a whole year of pestering to finally get my first board in 1997, which started me down a path through the best and worst times of my life.

As a dedicated downhill skater for most of my early career, I found myself alone most of the time. I didn’t fit in with park and street skaters, and they weren’t into the idea of risking their necks on hills. As a result, I never really experienced the community aspect of skateboarding that would come to change my life in later years. Unfortunately, I had to go through some hard times before discovering freestyle.

In early 2013, I took the worst slam of my life. Skating an unfamiliar hill, I took a wrong turn and found myself hurdling toward a dead end with no time to stop. I chose to run it out and safety roll at approximately 40 - 60 kmph. The resulting injuries landed me in physiotherapy on a powerful prescription for pain killers. The chronic pain, which I still deal with to this day, led me to turn to harder substances once the pills ran out. Before long, I found myself homeless in a new city. Out of desperation, I eventually took a job collecting debts for my dealer. They helped me get a slum apartment, which became known as “The Waiting Room”. All hours of the day, seven days a week, I would play host to the worst society had to offer. In 2015, I decided I was done letting drugs ruin my life, sick of hurting people to feed what had become an illness and a crutch. I kicked everything cold, left that apartment and never went back.

Though I had finally gotten sober, I was far from healthy. I took a string of fast food and retail jobs while dealing with the struggles of recovery and having neglected my diabetes for years. I ran myself into the ground and became deeply depressed, eventually leaving the workforce entirely in 2018. It was only after years of wasting away in my mom’s basement that I finally came back to skateboarding. There was no immediate epiphany or miraculous recovery, even then. I had tried returning to downhill, just to discover I had serious PTSD and couldn’t force myself to do it anymore. I was faced with the reality that I had lost the only thing I ever excelled at. From there, I tried getting into street skating and started the first iteration of my brand. I’d never tried learning tricks in all the years I skated, so I found myself discouraged and even more depressed. That’s about the time the pandemic hit, forcing us into a lockdown. During that time, I might as well have not existed.

It wasn’t until things began returning to normal that I stumbled across a chat room full of freestyle skaters. One in particular, Lucas Melo, encouraged me to give it a try. I went looking for my first freestyle board, discovering quickly that they weren’t sold in Canada. Not a single brand or shop carried proper freestyle gear in the entire country. In response to that problem, I sold most of what I owned and sank everything into properly starting my own brand. I hadn’t even landed my first trick yet. I fully realized that I was unqualified before I began, so I started surrounding myself with people that could teach and guide me along the way. After facing initial rejection and hostility from the first brand owner I contacted, I was lucky enough to get in touch with Witter Cheng, founder of Decomposed Skateboards. Since then, things have only gotten better and better. I find myself at the head of a globally recognized freestyle brand, helping people in need from all over the world.

Skateboarding gives and takes. I lost my early twenties to it, my friends, family, self respect, my health. Nearly lost my life over and over again. I may not be able to recover the time, but it’s given everything else back a thousand times over. Whatever you’re going through, go skate.

P.S. - I make tons of comma splice errors. Embrace your humanity.
